Sample Itinerary One - Take a ride (2 hours)

Some of our guests may choose just to take a round-trip ride for the scenery. We do make a stop at Beluga Point and Turnagain Gallery, after that just enjoy the ride and the beauty of Turnagain Arm.

It takes little time after heading south from Anchorage to be exposed to some of the most stunning scenery Alaska has to offer. Along with the spectacular views, you might spot Dall sheep on the rocky slopes, bald eagles along the mud flats or beluga whales in the water.


Sample Itinerary Two – Take in two Must-See Attractions (5-7 hours)

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and Portage Glacier Cruise. For this itinerary we suggest you go straight down to the Wildlife Center spend an hour or two. At the Wildlife Center, you will encounter Alaska's most famous animals such as bears, moose, wolves, musk ox, caribou, and more, in an open and natural setting. Then proceed on the shuttle to Portage Lake for the one hour cruise and later enjoy lunch or snacks at the Portage Glacier Lodge and walk some of the scenic trails in the area like the Trail of Blue Ice or the Byron Glacier Trail. The Begich Boggs Visitor Center is a worthwhile stop and provides in-depth information on the area. The center overlooks beautiful Portage Lake and offers in depth information on the wildlife, geology, and history of Portage Valley. The center once sat at the foot of the glacier, but due to climate change, getting to the glacier now necessitates a scenic half-mile walk or a boat cruise. Board your shuttle back to Anchorage at your leisure. Additional fees apply for admission to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and ticket for the Portage Glacier Cruise.


Sample Itinerary Three – Take in Three sights (7-10 hours)

Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Glacier Cruise and Alyeska Tram. This itinerary will require you to leave Anchorage on the first shuttle in order to not be rushed. Leave Anchorage at 8 a.m. go straight to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for an hour then on to the Portage Glacier Cruise. Take shuttle from Portage Glacier Lodge to Girdwood to catch the free shuttle to the Tram. Here you can purchase your tram ticket and proceed up the mountain for breathtaking views of Turnagain Arm. Take the Free Girdwood bus back to the shuttle and then to Anchorage. Board your shuttle back to Anchorage. Additional fees apply for admission to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, Portage Glacier Cruise, and the Alyeska Aerial Tram.


Sample Itinerary Four – Gold panning (3-4 hours)

Take the Shuttle to Beluga Point for a picturesque stop, then on to Turnagain Gallery to see some of the unique art from artisans and wood carvers in the area. You might even catch the owners son Jordan Anderson putting on a chainsaw carving demonstration. Then take the shuttle back north to Indian Valley Gold Mine and spend an hour or two browsing the gold rush museum and panning for gold. If time permits take a walk up the trail to Indian Valley Meats to sample some of the flavors of wild game and smoked salmon or their Alaska-made ice cream. Take the shuttle back to Anchorage at your leisure. Additional fees apply for admission to Indian Valley Mine and to purchase pay dirt to pan.


Sample Itinerary Five – Girdwood/Alyeska (4-6 hours)

For a more panoramic view of the surrounding area, take the turnoff to Girdwood, about 40 miles south of Anchorage, and head to the 5-star Alyeska Resort. Hop the ski tram up Mount Alyeska and enjoy a spectacular view of the surrounding area. There are nature trails for hiking and restaurants with knockout views. There are many places to go for lunch or dinner after a full day adventure in Girdwood. The local free bus is easy to get around on and their schedule is on this website. Board your shuttle back to Anchorage at your leisure. Additional fees apply for tram tickets.
